Daily Bread is an Auckland-based bakery brand that serves high quality baked goods and pastries.
Strata and Sgùrr were engaged to deliver the a theatrical 120 seat bakery flagship to distinguish the client in downtown Auckland.
The existing building was patiently restored by Cooper & Company, with the resulting space revealing heritage brick, kauri flooring and pronounced jarrah columns. The warmth of the existing heritage materials drove the decision to go with a neutral palette for all internal furnishings.
Each design element of the bakery was viewed as an opportunity to translate the client’s prescription of hand crafted, locally sourced ingredients that features across their product range. Lime plaster counters, carefully constructed jarrah leaners, and a heated communal table constructed of local aggregates were inserted into the space. These fixed elements were supported by hand stitched banquette seating, hand-built clay pendants and a custom stacking stool made in New Zealand, specifically for this location.
An operational bakery, we introduced stainless steel worksurfaces, and retained exposed ducting, machinery and equipment in the open plan kitchen to provide a vibrant and dynamic backdrop to the customer experience.
A full kitchen prep space was constructed in the basement below the cafe, which enabled an optimal kitchen layout for back-of-house operations to support the cafe, but also the other Daily Bread sites throughout the city.
